KAMLOOPS — On this World Kidney Day, a Kamloops athlete is a reminder that it is still possible to live a healthy and active lifestyle despite the disease.
Dale Calibaba has been waiting for a kidney transplant for over a decade.
Despite being a home dialysis patient he decided to embark on a cross country bike ride last Summer to raise awareness about the therapy and organ donor registry.
However last Fall a catheter infection slowed him down and postponed his journey.
“I was advised to stop the bike ride or risk further complications. I did and postponed it and they had to operate and take the catheter out and remove the infection and cyst.”
After four months of treatment and recovery, Calibaba is training to complete his ride from Kamloops to Victoria on May 23rd.
“Never give up on your dreams. It’s the same method I’ve been teaching across Canada. Home therapy and how it can improve your livelihood as a patient,” says Calibaba.
