Prescribed burn coming soon in Kenna Cartwright Park

KAMLOOPS — After a trial run proved successful last spring, the City of Kamloops will once again conduct a controlled burn inside Kenna Cartwright Park.

This time, however, the burn will be ten times larger than last year’s four-hectare project.

Nature Parks Crew Leader Kirsten Wourms says site preparation for the burn will take place starting today above Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre.

She notes if conditions are good, the public could see flames there later this week.

“One of our lines is the Ponderosa Trail, so we will be burning above that trail,” said Wourms, adding “we do ask that people stay away. Of course people are interested, if they do come along be aware that there is an initial attack crew in there, and we have a lot of (work) going on, so don’t get in the way if you see open fires, obviously stay away from that area.”

Wourms says last year’s burn proved very beneficial, with grasses bouncing back well and trees largely unaffected.
