RCMP end standoff on Kamloops North Shore

UPDATE — RCMP have arrested a man following an apparent standoff at a home on the North Shore last night. RCMP shut down a section of Royal Avenue on the Kamloops North Shore Wednesday evening.

According to reports on social media, the standoff began around the 6:00 p.m. hour.

The incident happened at a home in the 400- block of Royal Avenue.  Kamloops RCMP assisted by members of the Southeast District Emergency Response Team closed off the area and secured the scene to ensure public safety. The area closed off was between Knox Street and Ross Street. 

Sergeant Kelly Butler said in a news release that police eventually took a man into custody without incident about 11:15 PM. 

An RCMP negotiator was on scene as well, but earlier reports from bystanders that there might have been hostages involved has not been confirmed by police. 

Neighbours told CFJC Today’s Kent Simmonds that the home in question has been the scene of drug-related activity in the past. 

A more detailed release is expected later this morning. 

The area has since been re-opened, although RCMP maintained security at the scene overnight.

Officers have their attention focused on a home in the 400-block of Royal Avenue, and have the road blocked off between Knox Street and Ross Street.

In a news release, RCMP Sgt. Kelly Butler says police are responding to a male allegedly barricaded in the home.

Neighbours tell CFJC Today the home in question is notorious for drug-related activity.

In addition to local officers, members of the Southeast District Emergency Response Team (ERT) have also responded.

RCMP have did not say if there are any hostages involved, however an RCMP negotiator is on scene.

The public is being asked to stay away from the area.
