Strike of Kamloops casino workers having an impact on city gaming funds

KAMLOOPS — The ongoing strike of British Columbia Government and Service Employees Union members in Kamloops is beginning to affect the city’s gaming funds.

Employees of Cascades Casino in Kamloops have been on strike since late June, calling for fair wages.

While the casino has remained open during that time, the city’s Chief Administrative Officer David Trawin is estimating $150-$200,000 of revenue losses per month for the city.

“It still does affect us because … the percentage the city gets is based upon a percentage of the revenue that the casino makes,” Trawin said. “So, obviously when you don’t have as many people utilizing the gaming facilities (it) means less revenue coming to the casino which ultimately means less revenue back to the city.”
