Grief Resource and Support Program offered in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — An affordable Grief Resource and Support Program is now being provided in Kamloops. 

The Centre for Seniors Information is now offering counselling services instrumental for people in the community struggling with various levels of grief. The program also welcomes people referred to the centre from local community groups and businesses dealing with grief-stricken individuals after a death.

“We need to recognize a lot of the professional counselling in the community is unaffordable to some individuals, it’s necessary, but sometimes hard to get in and hard to access for low income individuals,”    says Brenda Prevost, Executive Director, Centre for Seniors Information.

The Grief Resource and Support Program isn’t just for seniors, people of any age can access the service. Several professionals in the community are involved with the program, including all the funeral homes in Kamloops.

“We pay for counselling for our families, which covers spouses, children, grandchildren anyone in the family having a difficult time with the grieving process, we pay for those visits to the centre as well as we try to support them financially as much as possible with fundraising or different things that we do together with them,” says Natasha Schrader, Funeral Director, Kamloops Funeral Home.

“You carry that with you if you don’t deal with that at the time, or shortly after, you can carry it for 20 years, 30 years with you, so it’s extremely important,” says Joseph Deal, Funeral Director, First Memorial Services.
