Court hears many responsible for Reinbrecht trial delays

KAMLOOPS — A trial plagued by delays is only seeing more, including during a hearing meant to determine whether those delays subverted Leon Reinbrecht’s right to justice.

Last October, Justice Sheri Donegan found Reinbrecht guilty for his part in a crash on Shuswap Lake five years earlier that took the life of houseboat operator Ken Brown.

During legal proceedings, Reinbrecht changed lawyers twice, and more delays came when he decided whether he needed legal aid funding.

This week, his lawyer Joe Doyle is arguing more delays were caused by the Crown and court system, and Reinbrecht’s right to a fair and speedy trial had been violated.

Argument on the Charter application is set to resume tomorrow.

Crown has yet to present its case, but will do so at the completion of defence evidence.

Then it’s up to Justice Donegan to decide how long is too long for Reinbrecht.
