Unseasonably warm temperatures in Kamloops to drop off by weekend

KAMLOOPS — Warmer than usual temperatures over the weekend will continue into this week, but they won’t last for long.

Bobby Sekhon is a meteorologist with Environment Canada. He says temperatures could get as high as 9 C in Kamloops tomorrow (Nov. 27), but it wouldn’t be breaking the record of 12 C set in 1998.

“The system that we’re dealing with right now is actually bringing a lot of sub-tropical moisture and air into BC so the moisture is mainly dropping along the coast,” Sekhon says. “However, this is bringing warmer air into the Interior as well. With the influence of this tropical source, that’s why we’re seeing warmer temperatures this time of year.”

The average high temperature this time of year is 2 C, while the normal low is -4 C. Sekhon says for the whole month of November Kamloops is roughly 1 C higher than normal but that could change with close to double-digit temperatures mid-week.

“Around Thursday is when we’ll start to see things get back to near seasonal really, so expecting a high of 4 C and our normal for this time of year is 2 C,” he says. “So we’re going to be in that vicinity for the end of the week and then actually into the weekend we’re dropping down to highs of only 1 C on Saturday and Sunday as well.”

Sekhon says even with temperatures dropping off it’s hard to predict when Kamloops will get some substantial snowfall.

“Unfortunately, it’s hard to nail down in terms of precipitation what the trend’s going to be in the upcoming weeks here, however as we know it’s not been as snowy as it usually is and it’s been warmer,” Sekhon says. “But the temperature outlook for the eight- to 14-day period looks to be below normal temperatures, so if anything we’ll be seeing cooler air and if moisture does come through that could lead to some snowfall.”
