KAMLOOPS — Members of Kamloops’ LGBTQ community are being invited to The Art We Are this evening for an event recognizing the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
Kamloops Pride President Laura Hsu says it’s meant to give people an opportunity to open up.
“It’s essentially an opportunity for people in the LGBTQ community who have experienced prejudice, or violence or any kind of discrimination in the past to come and share their story in a supportive environment with their peers,” said Hsu.
Hsu says she hasn’t experienced much discrimination herself, but knows of several friends who have been insulted and made subject to public humiliation here in Kamloops.
“Kamloops is still more of a conservative city, so I would say that there’s certainly room for improvement in terms of being more aware and accepting of the LGBTQ community.”
This evening’s event begins at 7 pm, and will include a march to city hall.
