Kamloops student runner-up in national writing contest

KAMLOOPS — A Grade 5 student from Lloyd George Elementary School in Kamloops was one of 11 runners-up in the Genworth Canada Meaning of a Home national writing contest.

Madisen Fehst was one of more than 7,000 Grade 4, 5 and 6 students from coast to coast submitting entries expressing what home means to them. 173 of those students were from Kamloops.

As a runner-up, Madisen chose to direct her winning grant of $5,000 to Habitat for Humanity Kamloops, helping the organization make the dream of home ownership a reality for families.

“We are so excited, just thrilled, really quite elated to find out that one of our students in Kamloops was one of the runners-up in this very significant national contest,” says Kim Cassar Torreggiani, executive director with Habitat for Humanity Kamloops. 

She says Madisen’s winning entry came in the form of a poem.

“And it’s just so well done. I guess what stood out for me was she mentioned love as what the meaning of home is for her and I think that’s exactly what we try to do for our habitat families. We provide strength, stability, and self-reliance.”
