KAMLOOPS — Among the residents taking part in Wednesday night’s budget meeting on McArthur Island were a group of students from Thompson Rivers University, some of whom were participating in municipal politics for the first time.

The TRU Student Union put out a call to different clubs on campus and about a dozen students came to see what the budget meeting was all about.

“I came here because I want to learn a bit more about how the program works, how everything runs,” said fourth-year TRU student Levi Dunn. “I don’t think much of our generation is involved in this, so I think understanding how it works behind the scenes is very important.”

Dunn took paricular interest in the city’s debt, which sits at 104 million dollars. Dunn, who attended a budget meeting earlier this year in his hometown of Quesnel, says he would like to see governments run like the private sector to cut down on the debt load.
