Cleanup begins after Vancouver storm series

VANCOUVER — BC Hydro crews have been working around the clock to respond to another wave of power outages caused by the last of three consecutive storms hitting the south coast.

BC Hydro spokeswoman Simi Heer says extra crews from the Interior were called in ahead of the storms to ensure a quick cleanup.

Despite the preparations, Heer says customers need to be patient if they lost power Saturday because some damages are more complex to repair than others.

Residents who see downed wires are warned to keep clear, assume the wires are live, and call 911.

The storm was not as violent as first predicted, but the winds and rains still took their tool. Social media created a frenzy complaining about too many precautions, but officials said they relied on forecasts that indicated much more serious conditions, and that safety for peoples’ lives had to be paramount.

B.C. Ferry sailings were cancelled for much of Saturday, and Stanley Park was shut down for fear of winds knocking down trees.
