Soaring gas prices not expected to impact Kamloops tourism

KAMLOOPS — As gas prices soar, many vacationers might be thinking twice about heading out on that long road trip.

Many commuters are feeling the pain at the pump, as gas hovers around a $137.9 per litre. While hundreds of thousands of people travel to the Southern Interior by car during the spring and summer months from other parts of the province, Canada, and even overseas, tourism officials say prices aren’t likely to derail travel plans and have a negative impact on Kamloops.

“We’re seeing a lot of drive markets from the Europeans and they’re used to paying quite a bit for their gas, so they’re not complaining about the price of our gas,” says Beverley DeSantis, CEO of Tourism Kamloops “We are seeing folks from Alberta, British Columbia drive markets and the Northwestern United States, Washington, Oregon even down into California coming up here, we’ve heard no indication that they won’t come and we’re seeing the numbers increasing, so we’re very encouraged about what’s going to happen this summer.”
