Blue Monday: fact or fiction?

KAMLOOPS — Apparently, it falls on the third Monday in January – Blue Monday is supposed to be the most depressing day of the year, due to a number of factors, including weather, Christmas bills coming due, and the possibility of lapsing in our New Years resolutions – but are there any facts to back up the name?

The name was first coined in 2005 the UK, in a press release sponsored by a travel company. According to Dale Senger, a Mental Health Social Worker in Kamloops, there aren’t really any facts to back up the colourful name.

“There is no research to corroborate that,” said Segner, adding “In fact, regarding suicide people might think that this time of year the rates of suicide and depression increase. The intensity of depression can increase, but depression is throughoutin the whole year.”

Senger also added there are some tried and true methods in combating depression, especially when it’s been exacerbated by the season.

“Eat healthy meals, stay active when you can, get out and embrace the sunlight, talk to your Doctor. If you find that this time of year your mood has really taken a downturn, talk to your Doctor for other options. They could explore other options, like medication.”
