RCMP investigate ‘improvised explosive device’ set off near Monte Creek

KAMLOOPS — RCMP are trying to determine who detonated an “improvised explosive device” near Monte Creek this morning.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the explosion happened on the shoulder of Dallas Drive, between Hook Road and Sonora Road, at about 7:05 a.m.

It doesn’t appear anyone was injured by the explosion.

“The blast, resulting smoke and a small fire were seen by a local resident who called police,” said Shelkie. “There is evidence that a vehicle was in the area at the time of the explosion. We are very interested in speaking to that person, or anybody who may have some information about who was involved in this dangerous act.”

Shelkie says the device was homemade, not an industrial explosive, and police believe it was set off on purpose.

“It was definitely in a rural area, away from people,” said Shelkie. “At this time it doesn’t appear that anybody wanted to cause harm to anybody in the area, so we don’t really know why somebody did that. But somebody definitely put together all of these explosive items to have some impact. We’re just not sure what the motivation is.”
