TRU welcomes students back with annual BBQ

“They’re in a new environment, and they want to know people,” TRUSU VP Simranjit Singh says. “Definitely we want [the students] to know the businesses and organizations, get to know what Kamloops and TRU have to offer for them.”

The BBQ is also an opportunity to catch up with friends and colleagues who you may not have seen over the summer.

“I think what’s really exciting about this event is that it’s the one time you see everybody,” Dean of Students Christine Adam explains. “We see our colleagues from across the campus, we see all the students – the new ones and also the ones that have returned. We see members of the community that many of us haven’t seen since the beginning of the summer.”

For those new to campus, the event gives them an idea of what they can expect during their university experience.

According to Adam, the event can help those new faces on campus as they begin their post-secondary education experience.

“A student’s education needs to move beyond classrooms,” Adam says. “Classroom work is foundational, but when they leave the classroom and go into different agencies and volunteer at different events and all of the things they learn about here today, they get to apply their learning. That’s really experiential learning at its finest.”

Of course, it’s always great to start your school year off with a free lunch.
