KAMLOOPS — Today marks Raise A Reader across the country, raising money for children and adult literacy programs.

In Kamloops, hundreds of volunteers, including Rotary Club members and TRU WolfPack athletes, were out in the morning collecting donations for literacy programs here and throughout the Thompson region.

150 volunteers were stationed at Starbucks and Tim Hortons around the city, stopping people during their morning coffee run, encouraging them to donate to the cause and handing out special editions of Kamloops This Week.

“All the money raised stay in our community,” said Literacy Outreach Coordinator with Literacy in Kamloops Fiona Clare. “We get a percentage of matching funds from the province and we use this to support literacy programs for all ages in Barriere, Chase, Clearwater, Logan Lake and Kamloops.”

With donations, sponsors, and government support, Clare says $118,000 was raised in the Thompson region last year, helping to fund various literacy programs.

“Literacy starts with Parent-Child Mother Goose for babies and familes because we know we need to start reading with our kids right from birth, talking and playing with them,” noted Clare. “We go right through to children’s literacy programs at the schools and we have programs for adults as well. Storybook program at the jail where inmates can read stories for their children. We have one to one for adults, just for adults who want to improve their reading, improve their literacy.”
