KAMLOOPS — Thompson Rivers University has joined forces with a worldwide program to ensure LGBTQ2S+ athletes are included and protected in their chosen pursuits.

At this morning’s Athletics Scholarship Breakfast, school officials announced TRU will be a ‘You Can Play’ school.

You Can Play began in 2012 in the United States.

As part of the initiative, the Wolfpack will host a ‘You Can Play/Pride’ game every year, starting with the women’s soccer match versus Trinity Western University this Saturday at Hillside Stadium.

The event will include information booths from Kamloops Pride and other local groups, and athletes and officials will wear rainbow jerseys.

Joining You Can Play has been a priority of Athletics and Recreation Director Curtis Atkinson since his hiring in January.

“I first heard about You Can Play a few years ago when the NHL partnered with the You Can Play project,” said Atkinson in a news release. “I really admired the work being done to promote diversity, equality and inclusion.  A lot of teams and individuals got behind it and it made an impact. I believe we can offer our support to build on that impact.”
