KAMLOOPS — It’s Waste Reduction Week in Kamloops, and the city’s downtown business association is doing its part to make things a little more green.

In a news release, the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association says it will be handing out free travel mugs at several locations this week to try and limit the amount of disposable coffee cups being used by residents.

“If you were to buy one cup of coffee every morning in a disposable cup, you would create 23 pounds of waste per year,” the release states. “In 2011, there were 6,335 residents living downtown. If each person bought one coffee a day for a year, the entire community would create 145,705 pounds of waste.”

The KCBIA says it wants to promote a sustainable community by handing out the mugs and asking everyone to pledge giving up wasteful paper cups. If you haven’t already, you can make the pledge here, or stop at the locations this week to make the pledge and pick up your mug.
