Timeline of assault against Jessie Simpson and aftermath

KAMLOOPS — On Tuesday, Oct. 23, Kristopher Teichrieb was sentenced to seven years in jail for a brutal assault against a teenager more than two years ago.

As court has heard, Jessie Simpson will never be the same, currently living in a care facility and requiring 24-hour care for the rest of his life. For the first time, the public has heard about what transpired in the early morning hours of June 19, 2016.

An agreed statement of facts has been provided to CFJC Today that shows a timeline of events before, during and after the assault.

JUNE 19

Midnight — Jessie Simpson arrives at a gathering in the 1000-block of Stardust Avenue in Kamloops with a number of friends. The home is located roughly 1.5 kilometres from Teichrieb’s home at 1715 Clifford Ave. Simpson drinks alcohol with friends into the early morning hours, and everyone is in a good mood with no altercations occurring. Simpson falls asleep on the couch at some point.

4:00 a.m. — Simpson wakes up to the homeowners asking Simpson and his friends to leave because they were going to bed. Simpson’s friends leave while he’s in the bathroom and the homeowners tell him which direction they went. Simpson follows, but returns to the home briefly to try and find his phone. He leaves again, alone and on foot.

4:30 a.m. — At some point during the early morning hours, Teichrieb’s common-law partner wakes up to the sound of their dogs barking. She wakes Teichrieb up and he goes to their bedroom window to overlook Clifford Avenue. Teichrieb tells her he sees a person walking up their driveway toward the back of their home. Teichrieb goes outside, taking an aluminum baseball bat with him. He checks the front of their home and then through their open front window tells his partner to call 911, saying he hears something from the backyard. She places that 911 call at 4:30 a.m. While on the phone with the operater, Teichrieb’s partner hears shouting between him and another man and says both voices sound confrontational. She says it doesn’t sound like the voices are still on the property, but rather toward the end of Holt Street.

Teichrieb says he encounters Simpson in his backyard on the northeast part of his property. Teichrieb tries to apprehend Simpson, who resists. Teichrieb punches Simpson in the face several times and Simpson punches Teichrieb. Simpson runs away from Teichrieb’s home to the side lawn of 517 Holt St. Teichrieb pursues him, striking Simpson with the baseball bat, with his fists and with his feet. Simpson is bleeding profusely and lying on the lawn.

4:32 a.m. — Doug Hills calls 911 from his home on Holt Street, where he lives with Bonnie Kimberley who also phones 911. Hills sees Teichrieb beating Simpson with an object he describes as both a stick and a bat at different times. He hears Simpson crying, and can see Simpson’s face covered in blood. He observes Teichrieb dragging Simpson across the street, then sees Teichrieb walk toward his house before returning and kicking Simpson in the head.

4:33 a.m. — Shawn Homer also lives on Holt Street, and calls 911 after seeing Teichrieb standing over and pointing down toward Simpson who is lying on the ground. Homer sees Teichrieb both kick and punch Simpson in the head, and dragging him about 15 metres along the ground by the loop on his backpack. Teichrieb is carrying the baseball bat in his hand.

Homer, Hills and Kimberley all hear Teichrieb repeating something along the lines of “stay the f*** out of my yard” or “why were you in my yard?” They see Teichrieb drag Simpson across the front lawn at 517 Holt St. across the street, and stop at the corner of Holt Street and Clifford Avenue. They watch as police arrive and arrest Teichrieb.

4:37 a.m. — The first police officers arrive at the corner. Cst. Bernier sees Teichrieb straddling Simpson, who is lying on the ground. Bernier tells Teichrieb to get off Simpson and tells him he’s under arrest. Teichrieb says to the officers “I got him”.

4:39 a.m. — A different officer places Teichrieb under arrest for aggravated assault.

AFTER THE ASSAULT

Bernier finds an aluminum bat lying roughly five feet away from where the officer saw Teichrieb and Simpson. Teichrieb has no observable injuries and DNA samples from the bat match Simpson’s DNA. Swabs from Teichrieb’s fingers of dried blood match Simpson’s DNA.

Teichrieb provides a statement to officers after his arrest, telling police he didn’t intend to kill Simpson and weeps intermittently through the statement. He tells police he saw Simpson coming down the driveway, heard his dogs barking and thought Simpson was trying to get into his house.

Teichrieb’s partner observes their home after the assault and finds no signs of a break-in.

Police officers observe a number of blood stains and drag marks leading from the side yard of 517 Holt St. around to the front yard, and across Holt Street to where it intersects with Clifford Avenue. Some of those stains match Simpson’s DNA.
