KAMLOOPS — UPDATE: A driver escaped with non-life threatening injuries after a frightening rollover near Cherry Creek yesterday.

At about 4:50 p.m., a car travelling on the Trans Canada Highway near Cherry Road went off the road to the right and rolled.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie of Kamloops RCMP says rescue crews had to take extreme measures to remove the driver.

“There was a single occupant in the vehicle and the driver had non-life threatening injuries. The fire department had to use the Jaws of Life to cut the roof off of the vehicle to get him out as the vehicle, when it landed, landed on the driver’s side,” said Shelkie.

Air ambulance was called despite the driver’s relatively minor injuries.

“I’m not sure why [BCAS] called the air ambulance,” said Shelkie, “but they were there and they did transport him to Royal Inland Hospital. But it was minor injuries.”

Shelkie says investigators are trying to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.

Though the angle of the sun has not been proven as a factor in the crash, Shelkie says this time of year, drivers need to take precautions.

“At this time, we don’t know what caused the accident. However, at this time of year, there is a glare that comes into vehicles that is right in the driver’s eyes,” noted Shelkie.

“So it’s really important that drivers take their proper precautions of putting down their sun visors, averting their eyes, if they need to to follow the fog line on the road, and just make sure they’re driving within the speed limit and that they’re not distracted.”
