Mission Flats housing project eases pressure on Kamloops shelter

KAMLOOPS — It seems everyone who needed a warm place to sleep last night was able to get one.

Christa Mullaly is the executive director of Kamloops’s Canadian Mental Health Association branch. She says after 22 clients from the Emerald Centre shelter moved into a new housing project on Mission Flats Road yesterday (Nov. 13), beds were still filled up.

“What that meant for us at Emerald Centre is we had a number of beds open up, so we filled all of those beds on both our men’s and ladies’ sides, and also brought in additional folks into our emergency beds,” she says. “We did not have any turn aways last night… Although we did have some more beds available last night, they were filled immediately.”

Mullaly says the CMHA is looking forward to the opening of another housing project on Royal Avenue next week, which can take in up to 40 people for short-term housing.

She says the fact that beds remained full at the Emerald Centre even with the new housing project speaks to the homeless situation in the city.

“I think we do have quite an incredible number of homeless individuals in Kamloops,” Mullaly says. “I think the numbers certainly speak to that, I think that as we open up additional beds and additional housing options, it always decreases the pressure on Emerald Centre. I know that there’s a number of projects going to be coming online over the next number of months here in Kamloops and we look forward to our numbers going down at Emerald Centre.”

Mullaly says The Branch on Royal Avenue is undergoing the last of its renovations before its expected opening early next week. The tenants for that housing projects have been selected through the “coordinated access table” — a group of front-line service providers that use a process to determine the best fits for these projects.
