KAMLOOPS — A trio of unanswered power play goals propelled the Kamloops Blazers to a 5-4 come-from-behind overtime win over the Seattle Thunderbirds Friday (Nov. 6) night at Sandman Centre.

Trailing 4-2 with less than five minutes left to play, Andrew Thomson scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season to pull the Blazers to within one. Gavin Nemis gave the crowd of 3,550 fans extra hockey, as his first career WHL goal restored parity with less than 18 seconds left in regulation.

“We had the extra man obviously so I got the puck down low and I was looking for an open teammate but they were taking them all away, so I saw a lane to the net and I shot it and luckily it went in,” Nemis said post-game.

“It felt awesome. I’ve had so many chances this year so to see that one go in at a time like that, it was awesome.”

Vit Zahejsky then ensured those fans left singing along to Sweet Caroline when he slotted home the overtime winner 4:15 into the extra frame. Like Nemis and Thomson before him, Zahejsky fired a shot into the net from the faceoff circle to the left of Seattle netminder Marek Sklenicka.

“The comeback was great,” Zahejsky added. ” Everybody played really good this game.”

Seattle led 2-1 less than five minutes into Friday’s contest through goals from Simon Lovsin and Jonas Kemps. Jacob Dumansky netted the Blazers’ opening goal 4:17 into the first period, his second of the season made it 1-1 on the night.

Joaquin Geras’ second of the season at 6:33 meant both teams went into the locker room tied at 2-2.

Seattle struck twice in the second period to pull ahead though Seamus Dillon and Marcus Laraque. The 2023 WHL champions went into the second intermission with a two-goal cushion that ultimately wasn’t enough.

Nemis and Zahejsky added assists to finish with two points on the night. Blazers captain Ty Bonkowski also chipped in two helpers.

Blazers netminder Logan Edmonstone stopped 21 of 25 shots to pick up his fourth win of the season. Sklenicka was almost twice as busy in the Seattle net as he stopped 41 of 46 shots in a losing effort.

The Blazers are off the rest of this weekend, and they’ll turn their attention to a Remembrance Day matinee against the Moose Jaw Warriors this Wednesday (Nov. 11).

Puck drop from Sandman Centre is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
