SICAMOUS, B.C. — Two years after construction began, there is some progress in the multi-year, multi-million dollar project to replace the R.W. Bruhn Bridge in Sicamous.

In a post on social media, Emil Anderson Construction said two of the four lanes on the bridge were opened to traffic last Friday (Oct. 30).

“We were honoured to have Splatsin lead an opening ceremony in recognition of the deep cultural significance of the area and provide a blessing on the new bridge prior to opening,” the statement said.

“Emil Anderson Construction extends its sincere thanks to the dedicated crews, project partners, including Splatsin Development Corporation, and Splatsin community members whose skill, hard work and collaboration brought the bridge to completion. Every contribution played an important role in reaching this milestone and creating a lasting connection for the community.”

There are still several daytime highway closures in effect, as construction is only expected to finish in late 2027. The project also includes the widening of 1.9 kilometres of highway to four lanes and intersection improvements between Old Sicamous Road and Silver Sands Road.

“Reduced speed limits on Highway 1 near the R.W. Bruhn Bridge are in effect 24/7,” a statement from the Ministry of Transport and Transit said. “This is an active construction zone. Please travel with care and keep outside the project limits when accessing the Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail.”

The total project will cost an estimated at $260.5 million, which includes up to $91.08 million from the Government of Canada.
