MP Caputo hopes to see Liberals use Thursday budget to cut waste, reinvest in Canadians

KAMLOOPS — The federal fall budget will be presented in the House of Commons on Thursday (Nov. 5), with keen eyes from the Kamloops area watching for a pair of policy changes from the governing Liberals.

Finding a balance between investing in Canadians and managing debt, that is the task ahead of the federal budget on Thursday. Kamloops-Thompson-Nicola MP Frank Caputo believes investments can be funded by cutting government waste.

“A lot of the time, the government cuts back on the smallest of things and forgets to cut back on these massive amounts of waste,” Caputo told CFJC News. “And that is what concerns me, is the $5 million here, the $100,000 there – at the end of the day, that adds up.”

Earlier this week, Tory leader Pierre Poilievre took aim at the rising debt in Canada and the costs of servicing the debt instead of investing back into the country.

“It’s an insult for Mark Carney to tell people in that situation affordability is the best it’s been in a decade. Carney is out of touch, his costs are out of control and Canadians are out of money,” Poilievre told reporters in Ottawa.

In the riding, Caputo is looking for investments in Merritt for flood protection, Barriere for a new fire hall, and Kamloops for infrastructure, the Red Bridge replacement and housing.

“So often what we’ve seen with the government is there is a focus on the big centres, which I understand, but we can’t forget about places like Kamloops, a mid-sized municipality,” said Caputo. “We have a lot of housing needs. I believe we have the room to build but the infrastructure isn’t necessarily there.”

Caputo is also keeping an eye on policy changes around taxation on gifted land transfers to community land trusts.

“This has been a labour of love for Colin O’Leary. He has put out so much of his own money, his own time because he believes in this. To me, these are heroic efforts. This is 100 per cent his idea. I would love to see it in the budget. In fact, I sent a private email to the minister of finance asking that he give this due consideration,” added Caputo.

While it’s been rumoured that Sun Peaks could see the foreign owners ban lifted, Caputo is unsure if that move will make the final budget document.
