KAMLOOPS — A quintet of Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack soccer players earned year-end honours from Canada West in 2026.

TRU women’s soccer team includes four of those players. Sara Kuusimäki and Floor Ursem were named Pacific Division All Stars while Allison Hill and Hannah Saxon were named to Canada West’s All-Rookie team.

Kuusimäki, a second-year winger from Finland, scored two goals and added an assist in 14 regular season matches for the WolfPack in 2026. She also scored in TRU’s 3-1 Canada West quarter-final win over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

Ursem, a second-year goalkeeper from the Netherlands, started in all 14 regular season matches for the WolfPack in 2026, finishing fourth in Canada West with 70 saves. Her 0.875 save percentage was also second among qualified Canada West goalkeepers. Ursem also recorded seven clean sheets.

It’s Ursem’s second Canada West year-end honour after she was named to the All-Rookie team in 2025.

Hill, a first-year midfielder, started in 13 matches for the WolfPack and played in all 14 during the regular season. The Valleyview Secondary graduate scored three goals and added three assists.

Saxon, a first-year winger from New Zealand, started in 12 matches for the WolfPack and played in 13. She scored two goals and added an assist.

On the men’s side, Amir Ghasemi was named to the Canada West All-Rookie team. The first-year midfielder from Coquitlam started in eight matches for the WolfPack and appeared in 12 during the regular season. Ghasemi had one assist.

TRU’s women’s soccer team finished second in the Pacific Division with eight wins, two losses and four draws. The WolfPack men’s team finished fourth in the Pacific with seven wins, seven losses and one draw.

The WolfPack men’s soccer team bowed out of the Canada West playoffs, falling to the University of Calgary Dinos 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

WolfPack women’s shot at nationals

Meanwhile, the WolfPack women are off to the Canada West semifinals to play the University of Victoria (UVic) Vikes. UVic, who finished fourth in the Pacific Division with four wins, three losses and seven draws, upset the top team in the Prairie Division – the 12-2-0 University of Calgary Dinos – 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

TRU and UVic had two draws in their head-to-head regular season matchups in September – a scoreless draw in Victoria and a 1-1 draw in Kamloops.

If the WolfPack defeat the Vikes, it would be the first Canada West medal in TRU’s women’s soccer program history. It would also send the WolfPack women’s soccer team to the U Sports Women’s Soccer Championship for the first time ever.

The University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds, the No. 2 ranked U Sports women’s soccer team, are hosting the national tournament, meaning they have secured one of the eight spots in the tournament. Canada West has two spots allocated for the U Sports Women’s Soccer Championship – its playoffs winner and playoffs runner-up.

If the Thunderbirds defeat the Trinity Western University Spartans in the Canada West semifinals, their opponent will automatically secure a berth in the national championship while the bronze medal match will determine the second Canada West spot. If the T-Birds lose in the semis, both teams in the Canada West finals will advance to nationals.

The WolfPack will play the Vikes in the semifinals Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7:00 p.m. from UBC. The bronze medal match will take place Friday, Nov. 6, at 1:00 p.m. while the Canada West championship will follow suit at 4:00 p.m., both from UBC.
