COLLINS: May God help us all

Nov 2, 2026 | 6:08 AM

FIRST OF ALL, you know what’s been nice this week? Not seeing or hearing those damn election commercials trying to tear down the opponents while promising the moon to voters who don’t have any idea what is specifically being proposed and how it will be paid for.

The words in the title were part of a discussion I had with a union shop steward a couple of days before the votes. His worry concerns the way the BC Liberal party years ago cut expenses so much that many services were stripped to the bone. He didn’t disagree with criticism over the timing of the election call, nor the way the NDP acted over the last few months. But he said the Conservatives were going to set us back decades with cuts affecting budgets and jobs. I looked at a list originating with the Canadian Press, outlining some of the promises made during the campaign. You tell me what will happen.

NO NEW TAXES OR TAX INCREASES

Right off the bat, a promise that cannot be kept without destroying key elements of our infrastructure. Costs will continue to rise. We will not be able to run the province without increasing taxes, let alone dealing with the premier-elect’s promise to give us a good-sized cut to our personal income tax.

SUPER CHARGE THE ECONOMY: REDUCE THE DEFICIT

The Conservatives would have you believe that they can reduce the deficit based on projected increases in the gross domestic product. But we have no idea if the GDP will rise to those levels. They also talked about freezing outside hiring, cutting consultants and reviewing spending in various departments. Sounds to me like a witch hunt to find jobs to cut as opposed to streamlining for efficiency.

REPEAL DRIPA

The premier-elect would repeal DRIPA, the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.

Aside from the political repercussions of such an arbitrary move, it smacks of something Donald Trump is doing in the U.S. I see years of legal battles ahead.

REPEAL SOGI

The Conservatives are running scared on this one, because they are not anxious to support a bill that would provide funds to make schools safe for students of all sexual preferences.

FULLY FUND HEALTH CARE

If you believe the Conservatives on this one, you have really missed the boat.

Health care is in such shambles, and the premier-elect has no grasp of how much more money needs to be spent than can be raised if we hold funding at current levels. I feel for the Health Minister who gets saddled with this portfolio.

PORTABLE FUNDING FOR LONG-TERM CARE

This is a very complex issue. On the face of it, seems like a cost-gobbler. And I don’t think it’s practical.

HIRE MORE POLICE

The Conservatives want to hire 250 more officers by expanding the police academy, and add 500 officers and 150 civilian staff, mainly in rural areas. Again, where is the money coming from?

EXPAND NATURAL GAS AND LNG DEVELOPMENT.

Another potential firestorm with this one. I’m not sure if the premier-elect talked to anyone about this, but the roadblocks are huge. Legal disputes with Indigenous peoples as well as communities adjacent to the pipeline are sure to occur, and they may fracture relationships that will take a long time to recover.

Job cuts will almost certainly happen.

It may not be a pretty sight.

I think the shop steward I talked to may have a point when he said, “if the Conservatives get in, then God help us all.”

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
