Russell Brand testified in his own defense at London’s Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday, denying three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of attempted indecent assault. The British comedian, 51, answered “no” to each charge when questioned by his lawyer. “Consent is fundamental, essential, necessary, and indeed in many ways more important than sex itself,” Brand said. Six women accuse Brand of sexual misconduct between 1999 and 2009. Prosecutors described him as “ruthless, calculating, manipulative” and “a sexual predator.” Brand acknowledged past “reckless philandering” but maintained all encounters were consensual. He said the allegations have had a “devastating” impact on his personal and family life. “Not guilty is my plea in every single case,” he said.
