Barb’s Used Book & Music Sale returns to St. Andrew’s on the Square

KAMLOOPS — The latest edition of Barb’s Used Book and Music sale is underway, and it’s back in the space it hopes to call home for the foreseeable future.

The twice-annual sale has returned to St. Andrew’s on the Square for the first time since the fire two years ago. A majority of the collection was destroyed in that fire, making this return especially significant.

“We very much view St. Andrew’s on the Square as the home for the book sale,” Kamloops Symphony Orchestra executive director Christopher Young said. “There’s something about being able to pick up a book and feel the history of the book and also the space that you’re in.”

“This is the oldest building in the community and to be able to have so many stories shared through the sale and what is represented by this physical space here… it feels right.”

St. Andrew’s on the Square reopened in June this year after an extensive renovation that brought it back to its pre-fire condition.

“We’re so excited to be able to be back in this fantastic space,” Young added. “It’s amazing to have so many people gather and be part of this community in a space that has such a rich history.”

This is the 29th year for the twice-yearly sale, which began in 1997 as an idea of then-KSO board member Barb Corbishley. It was renamed in her honour after her passing.

Young said all proceeds go toward supporting the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra and the KSO Music School, helping make music more accessible to the community. This fall’s sale will run 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays until Oct. 31.

“We’ve still kept all of our prices the same,” Young added. “Most of our books are between $1 and $3, and the selection has been wonderful. Our army of volunteers have made sure that every book that comes up on the floor is something that somebody in this community is going to love.”

“There are so many treasures, lots of local authors, lots of kids books, obviously lots of fiction. We are just so blessed to be able to be able to continue this sale.”
