MLA CANDIDATE ISSUE #3 – Addressing challenges in the healthcare sector
KAMLOOPS — Rural emergency room closures have become all too common in recent years, with many folks being forced to travel multiple hours for critical care. A lack of primary-care physicians also impacts healthcare outcomes in our province. Each party was asked, “Emergency rooms throughout the Interior face regular closures, while Kamloops still far exceeds the provincial average in people without a family doctor. What is your party’s plan to address the challenges in health care?”
Independent Thaelo Proctor believes the other parties have put forward great solutions to the healthcare challenges in the province, saying they need to be implemented.
“I think every party has put forward some great solutions. What we need to do is work toward actually implementing those solutions, not talking about them. I will support most of those solutions,” said Proctor, running in Kamloops Centre. “What we need is to hear from the working-class doctors, the working-class nurses, the patients, and see how these systems are failing from the inside. There are all these theories all these politicians are putting forward, but really what is going to work is what the people with hands on the ground have seen and know. With all these situations, we need more oversight from the doctors, from the nurses and from patients to see the systems that are actually going to work.”
