WolfPack rookie Poole shoots shot, buries crucial penalty to push TRU closer to post-season

KAMLOOPS – Noel Poole is a Canada West rookie, but he walked toward the ball with the conviction of a fifth-year hitman and designated penalty taker on Saturday [Oct. 17] in Langley, with his TRU WolfPack playing the Trinity Western Spartans in a men’s soccer match that had major playoff implications.

The second-half substitute – who had never scored a U Sports goal prior to Saturday’s contest – had the ball in his hands before his teammates were finished revelling in the opportunity to tie the match in second-half injury time.

“That’s what you want,” WolfPack head coach John Antulov said. “You want guys who want those moments. It was no different than in nationals in 2022, where we had the Comitas (brothers Alesandro and Domenico) go, ‘Give me the ball,’ and Jonny Rinaldi go, ‘Give me the ball.'”

Poole calmly slotted the penalty in the 93rd minute, the goal securing a 1-1 draw that puts TRU in control of its post-season destiny heading into the final weekend of regular season play.

“I’m really confident from the spot,” Poole said. “I’ve done it many times before in big games. I don’t know if anyone else wanted to take it in that moment, but I knew as soon as I saw it was a penalty that I wanted to be the person to step up and take it because I knew I would be there for my team when they needed it.”

Added WolfPack midfielder Alesandro Comita: “I’m so happy for him to get his first goal and to score such a big goal for us in a crucial time. It was so amazing for him, his family and for us.”

TRU holds the fourth and final post-season berth in the Pacific Division, with a winning percentage of .487. The Spartans (.429) are in fifth place and can still leapfrog the Pack.

Trinity (5-6-3) and TRU (6-6-1) are scheduled to meet on Saturday [Oct. 24] in Kamloops, the final match of the regular season for both clubs. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Hillside Stadium.

The meaning of the game will be determined by what happens on Friday.

The WolfPack will play host to the winless UBC Okanagan Heat (0-13) of Kelowna. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Hillside.

Meanwhile, the Spartans will play the Cascades (7-3-4) in Abbotsford, squaring off against a Fraser Valley side that’s jostling with the Victoria Vikes (7-4-2) for second place in the Pacific Division. UBC (13-0-2, .911) has already clinched top spot in the division.

TRU has not reached the playoffs since 2024.

“For me, as a coach, I want to see how my players react,” Antulov said. “I think it’s a good place for us to be in. Would I prefer to be in a playoff position already? Yeah, but for us to be able to have our destiny in our own hands is actually a good thing.”

The match on Saturday will take place on Seniors’ Night and will mark the final regular-season home game for Kamloops brothers Alesandro and Domenico Comita.

“Just looking across and seeing your brother, who is the captain and whose been such a great leader and role model for me, it’s been so amazing being able to play with him,” Alesandro Comita said.
