KAMLOOPS — Details are beginning to emerge after a missing senior was found dead in Brocklehurst by Kamloops Search and Rescue (KSAR) crews on Thursday (Oct. 8) last week, but police say criminality is not suspected.

Kamloops RCMP confirmed on Tuesday (Oct. 13) that the woman lived at a senior’s community living complex in Brocklehurst. RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dana Napier said officers were called to help search the building and nearby areas around 9:15 p.m. last Wednesday (Oct. 7) night.

“As part of the investigation, our police dog services was deployed along with Kamloops Search and Rescue and it was later into the next morning that Kamloops Search and Rescue was able to find the woman and she was found deceased,” Napier said.

“At this time, the investigation has been turned over to the BC Coroners Service, and criminality is not suspected.”

CFJC Today learned from several sources that the woman – who was in her 80s – lived at RiverBend Manor, an independent living facility not far from the Brock Shopping Centre.

“We did a search along the Thompson River and in some of the neighbourhoods where she was last seen,” KSAR Search Manager Alan Hobler added. “She was last seen at lunch time and it wasn’t noticed she was missing until quite a bit later, I believe it was after suppertime, probably around 7:00 p.m.”

“[The] RCMP did a quick search and then called us out to assist and one of our teams located her deceased on the banks of the Thompson River.”

The woman’s identity has not been publicly released, and it’s also not clear why she left the independent living facility and headed to the banks of the river. Hobler noted the woman was partially submerged in the water when she was found by KSAR, but he could not provide more specifics.

“[The search] didn’t take us too long, maybe 20 to 30 minutes,” Hobler said. “We kind of put the teams in the right location, but it could have been a lot longer as well. We let the police know and [we] assisted packaging her up and removing her from the area and turning over to the coroners..”

“We just want to send our condolences out to her family.”
