KFR urging caution after crews knock down kitchen fire ahead of Thanksgiving long weekend

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) is urging caution ahead of the Thanksgiving long weekend after they made quick work of a small kitchen fire in Batchelor Heights Friday (Oct. 9) morning.

Just over a dozen firefighters responded to a house on Wagon Place just after 9:30 a.m. Friday. BC Emergency Health Services was also called in as a precaution as were crews from Fortis BC and BC Hydro.

KFR Platoon Chief Ken Hartt told CFJC that firefighters were able to prevent the fire from causing too much damage.

“When we arrived, there was just smoke that we found,” Hartt said. “Crews went in and they did strike a small fire in the kitchen and, basically, we have some damage in the kitchen area and some smoke damage to the upstairs area of the house.”

“Crews pulled the ceiling down a little bit to make sure the fire wasn’t in the roof, which it was not, so the fire is contained to the kitchen area at this time.”

No injuries were reported and Hartt said a fire investigator will be tasked with determining a more specific cause.

This incident has Kamloops Fire Rescue also reminding people to be extra careful when hosting Thanksgiving dinners over the long weekend.

“It is that time when ovens are going to be left on, pots on the stove are going to be left on, air fryers get used nowadays, so make sure you’re checking that you’re shutting them off or having a timer on them to make sure we don’t have another kitchen fire at this time,” Hartt added.

Hartt also urged people to call 911 if a fire breaks out, noting crews will be on scene as quickly as they can.
