COLLINS: Can you really do a lot as a politician?

IN A WORD, maybe.

Politics is a tough game to play. Many people get involved because they are under the misconception they can make a difference. They can’t – not by themselves. There has to be a group who are on the same page to make decisions which will move the city forward or backward depending on their viewpoint.

In my view, that is why our current council got quite a bit done, despite all the infighting. You have eight candidates to represent your interests. Look at the profiles. All of them. Sometimes a candidate you would place lower down your list may share more of your views than that person higher up.

Another word of advice – do not vote for a candidate who has tried to run on only one issue. A one-issue candidate rarely wins – he or she seldom makes enough of an impact to win enough to carry their issue through.
