Packed room for Kamloops seniors-focused election forum Thursday

KAMLOOPS — Municipal campaigning is well underway in the city of Kamloops. Thursday afternoon (Sept. 24), council candidate Nancy Bepple coordinated with the Mount Paul Community Centre to host a seniors’ election forum, giving the public an opportunity to get to know the candidates before heading to the polls.

It was a packed venue, with around 150 people in attendance. Each candidate got the opportunity to answer two questions of their choosing when asked by the moderator. The event provided insight to undecided voters and received overall positive feedback.

“I decided to come out as a senior to find out how we can lower taxes, but the interesting thing about it is that it was a good forum,” said one attendee. “There are a lot of candidates. We’re going to have trouble trying to figure out who to vote for.”

Others are looking to see what new candidates are bringing to the table.

“I think the biggest thing is I have been appalled at what I’ve heard about what’s going on in city council these last four years,” said another Kamloops resident. “And so I just I wanted to hear about some of the others. I made some definite decisions and I have some questions I want to think about with some of the other candidates.”

The public asked an array of different questions covering multiple issues. A hot topic of discussion was the alternative approval process (AAP) and how it would look going forward. Some voters who spoke to CFJC were passionate about budget issues, while others are looking for stability in city hall.

“They need to get along,” exclaimed two voters. “They really need to start getting along and bringing some positivity back to our city rather than all this negativity and people want to move.”

General election day in Kamloops is October 17.
