KAMLOOPS — A new mobile clinic aims to expand access to health care and outreach services in Kamloops.

The City of Kamloops says it led the funding acquisition and vehicle procurement for the mobile health care outreach van while Interior Health will provide staff and services. In a joint news release issued Tuesday (Sept. 23), the city says the van was fully funded through the federal Emergency Treatment Fund.

The city says the van will support residents who may face challenges accessing traditional health care, including people experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity, older adults, people with accessibility or mobility needs and residents connected with Interior Health’s outreach service.

“This initiative is about much more than a vehicle,” Ashley Ekelund, the city’s social and community development supervisor, says. “It is about improving access to health care and ensuring residents can receive support in a safe, accessible and dignified environment.”

The van’s features include a wheelchair lift, a private treatment area, a medical examination bench, diagnostic equipment and expanded storage for medical supplies to support year-round service delivery.

Additionally, the city says the accessible design will allow healthcare providers to reach more people throughout Kamloops while offering patients a comfortable, private and safe space to receive care.

“Supports and services offered through the van help reduce pressure on emergency services and hospital resources while also complimenting other mobile services operated through other community partners like ASK Wellness,” Dr. Andy Delli Pizzi, Interior Health medical health officer, says.

The city also says residents will have access to health assessments, wound care, harm reduction services, wellness supports and referrals to additional health and social services.

The mobile health care outreach van is expected to become operational in October 2026.
