This spring, Gardengate workers began planting in new beds, with carrots, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, beans, onions, lettuce and peppers among the crop. 

CFJC Today dropped by Gardengate on Tuesday to find Overlander residents at a wash station, cleaning the produce before it was hauled away to the kitchen. 

“That is kind of one of the main goals, the collaboration and connection between the two,” Klaver said. “We harvest it, wash it and then we deliver it right to the Overlander kitchen. They prepare it for the Overlander residents and we’ve only heard great reviews.” 

Eileen Wallace, food service supervisor for Overlander, offered a tour of a well-stocked cooler and noted kitchen staff have found it challenging to keep up with the Gardengate deliveries. 

“We’re using it for all the meals we can,” Wallace said. “It’s a very lovely program and wonderful for our residents to be able to participate in.” 

Added Klaver: “So many of the residents had gardens of their own, so reconnecting back to that, it’s so cool to see and hear their stories.”
