Terry Fox Run set for Sunday as organizers hope for another record turnout in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Riverside Park in Kamloops will once again host the annual Terry Fox Run this Sunday (Sept. 20), and organizers say momentum is growing as people prepare to honour one of Canada’s greatest heroes.

This is the 46th edition of the annual event to raise money for cancer research and organizer Sue Steenson said more than 500 participants are expected to be in attendance in Kamloops this year.

“Everybody is affected by cancer – family, friends, you know somebody – and so when we talk about Terry Fox, people want that feeling of, ‘We can do this,'” Steenson said. “He believed we could end cancer by funding the research and giving the scientists the money to finish the answers, and that’s what we’re doing.

“That belief brings us so much hope and I think that’s why people come out.”

Registration is still open, either online or in person Sunday morning, and you can walk or run in support of a good cause. The run will start and end at the Riverside Park Bandshell, and you can choose between a 1 -km, a 5-km or a 10-km run.

“We have people registering in groups this year, in teams from work, families – and that’s what we want to see,” Steenson said. “You can donate, volunteer or participate as a team or an individual.”

Last year, Kamloops residents help raised $90,000 – around $63,000 of which came on race day alone. Steenson noted another $28,000 was raised at school runs across Kamloops in 2025 for a total of around $118,000, which smashed the old record of $59,000 that dated back to 1985.

Steenson said the goal this year is to raise another $100,000 to meet Terry Fox’s original goal of $1 raised for every person.

“Terry Fox started this 46 years ago and it was such an incredible thing that he did,” Steenson added. “We’re here in Terry’s name and he was weighed down by cancer and couldn’t finish but we’re lifting it up off his shoulders and we’re going to finish what he started.”
