Social worker Lloyd-Middleton joins Kamloops’ mayoral race

KAMLOOPS — The race for the mayor’s chair in Kamloops is the most contested in recent history with six people in the race, including the incumbent, former councillors and political newcomers. The last name to appear on the docket was Kris Lloyd-Middleton, who got her nomination papers in just ahead of the deadline last Friday (Sept. 11).

Middleton is the founder of Same Sky Collective on the North Shore, a social worker and a staunch supporter of safe supply. Now she’s running for the top job at Kamloops city hall.

“I seriously believe that evil prevails when good men fail to act,” said Middleton. “And I’m not saying my colleagues are evil, but what I’m saying is there are a lot of things, lot of policies, lot of decisions that are killing people. And if I don’t use all of my abilities to fight that, then I’m complicit.”

She believes if neighbours felt more comfortable getting to know each other, it would go a long way toward improving safety.

“We find it makes us more of a community when we have more spaces where we can gather,” added Middleton. “Rather than being so car-dependent, let’s use these legs or wheels or what we have to meet our neighbours. I think that is going to help a lot with the security of the neighbourhood.”

Middleton wants to see local government support residents more so than developers.

“They are going to build there no matter what. Why are we subsidizing developers instead of people? Let’s subsidize our working class,” Middleton told CFJC News.

Middleton stated she plans to run a positive campaign.

“It’s about the work, not the personalities, and if I’m fortunate enough to be the new mayor, I’m going in there to do the work to the very best of my ability every day,” said Middleton.

Election night is Saturday, October 17.
