Sold-out Gur Singh Memorial tournament supports brain-injury survivors

KAMLOOPS — The 23rd annual Gur Singh Memorial Golf Tournament took place on Friday (Sept. 11) at Bighorn Golf and Country Club.

A convoy of carts rolled out for the shotgun start at about 11:00 a.m. and it was 12 o’clock somewhere for some groups, with more than 140 golfers in a festive mood at the Kamloops Brain Injury Association fundraiser.

“Brain injury is typically invisible,” said David Johnson, executive director of the KBIA. “They know they have the injury, but everyone around them doesn’t see it, so they feel very isolated. When they come out here and see all these people who know what brain injury is and they’re supporting brain injury survivors, it makes a really big impact. They’re like, ‘I’m seen and people want to help.'”

Tee boxes were equipped with all sorts of games, including darts and a chipping contest. Survivors mingled with golfers before they took aim at the fairway.

“It’s great to be out here, honestly,” said Rory Young, a brain injury survivor. “Having this injury, it’s really challenging to navigate your way through it. It’s a really helpful community to be surrounded by and it’s great to come out here and show support for a community I’ve become so proud to be a part of.”

The fundraiser tournament is named after Dr. Gur Singh, a neurosurgeon and philanthropist who started the charity event in 2004.
