Dogs involved in Valleyview attack in CSO custody: city

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops says it is in possession of two dogs believed to be involved in an attack in the Valleyview area that sent one man to hospital last week.

In a statement dated Sept. 8 posted to the city website and on social media only, the city said the dogs were seized over the Labour Day long weekend and they’re in the care of the Community Services Division.

“The city can confirm that, following continued efforts to locate the dogs involved in the September 2 incident and ongoing work with the victim, Community Services located and seized the dogs this past weekend,” the statement said.

“This action was taken because of continued concerns for public safety if the dogs remained in the owner’s custody.”

Eric Dean told CFJC Today he was out for his regular lunchtime jog along the South Thompson River over the noon hour on Sept. 2 when the dogs pounced on him. He suffered bites to both arms and one thigh, and ended up sore and in need of stitches.

“It’s concerning for public health and safety in this area,” Dean said of the incident. “I don’t know what the answer is, but social disorder has a lot of causal factors and it’s definitely concerning how things have changed. I grew up here and I don’t feel like it’s my home anymore.”

Will Beatty, the city’s community services manager previously told CFJC that one option – once the dogs are located – is to apply to the courts to have the animals put down. At this time, it’s not clear if the city intends to pursue that route or whether any fines have been issued to the owners of the dogs.

In its statement, the city also did not elaborate where exactly the dogs were located or who their owners are. It also said no further information or updates will be provided while the file remains active.

“The city appreciates the public’s understanding while the matter continues through the appropriate process,” the city statement added.
