CRD lifts final evacuation alert near French Bar Creek wildfire

LILLOOET, B.C. — The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has given the ‘all clear’ to properties under its final evacuation alert in response to the French Bar Creek wildfire.

The CRD said the EOC lifted the alert shortly before noon on Thursday (Sept. 3), as activity at the fire dies down.

However, the CRD is urging people to remain vigilant as the French Bar Creek wildfire is still considered out of control and fire risk has not subsided completely.

“An evacuation alert or order may need to be reissued if it is deemed necessary. Residents must be prepared if the area receives a future evacuation order or alert on short notice,” said the CRD.

“Residents are advised to ensure they maintain their emergency kits and monitor the EOC and BC Wildfire’s social media pages to stay informed.”

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) said rain in recent days has helped douse the 61,786-hectare blaze, with more to come.

“Significant rain is expected later today (Sept. 3), with up to 45 mm of potential rain falling in the area by Saturday (Sept. 5),” said the BCWS.

“Fire behaviour is expected to be low again today.”

The BCWS has 12 firefighters assigned to the fire, backed up by 15 helicopters assigned to the Big Bar Complex.

“A crew of firefighters will be conducting mop-up on the southeast edge of the French Bar wildfire today, if weather conditions allow for safe access,” said the BCWS.

“Structure protection equipment has been removed from the areas east of the wildfire, as fire activity continues to be low.”

The fire was first reported by the BCWS on July 4, with the exact cause of the blaze still under investigation.

This comes as the Pear Lake wildfire, also in the Big Bar Complex, was downgraded from being a wildfire of note by the BCWS.
