TNRD extends deadline for FireSmart Homeowner rebate program

KAMLOOPS — Property owners in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) have an extra month to apply for a FireSmart rebate.

The TNRD says the deadline to apply for the FireSmart Homeowner Rebate program has been extended to Oct. 31, instead of the previous deadline of Sept. 30.

“This program is open to all Electoral Area property owners and will cover up to 50 per cent to a maximum of $1,000 for fire mitigation done within 30 metres of their home,” a statement from the TNRD said.

“Rebates can cover actual costs incurred for mitigation work or costs of labour by the homeowner.”

Property owners have to follow a series of steps to apply for a TNRD FireSmart rebate as outlined below:

  1. Request a free FireSmart Home Assessment online here. Those who require assistance can contact TNRD FireSmart staff at 250-377-8673 or firesmart@tnrd.ca.
  2. After a Home Assessment is completed and a report has been provided, review recommendations for mitigation work.
  3. Act on mitigation work that has been recommended. A FireSmart Assessment Rebate Form will be provided, and residents will be asked to record personal hours, if applicable, and any money spent on contractors or materials. Invoices or receipts will be required.
  4. Schedule a follow-up inspection by contacting TNRD FireSmart staff once work is completed.
  5. After the follow-up inspection, submit your rebate application form via email to firesmart@tnrd.ca.

“Funding through this rebate program is available on a first-come, first-serve basis and is open for TNRD Electoral Area properties only,” the TNRD statement added, noting people who live in a member municipality, First Nation, or neighbouring regional district should contact their local government.

“Throughout 2026, TNRD FireSmart staff have conducted more than 140 free home assessments and assessed more than 320 structures. Staff continue to attend community events, facilitate free chipping days, and make education materials available for residents doing fire mitigation work at home.”
