Environment Canada warns of heavy rainfall and potential thunderstorms for Thompson region

KAMLOOPS — Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement ahead of a storm that could bring heavy localized rainfall and thunderstorms to the Fraser Canyon, South Thompson and Nicola regions Friday evening (Aug. 28).

The forecaster said this comes as an upper level low will across the South Coast and southwestern Interior from late Friday night into Saturday morning (Aug. 29).

“Showers and thunderstorms associated with this system could produce locally heavy rainfall, with rainfall rates potentially high enough to cause localized flash flooding, especially in areas with slow moving showers,” said Environment Canada officials.

“Current weather model guidance suggests that locally significant rainfall amounts are possible.”

That said, Environment Canada does not know exactly where or how hard the heaviest rainfall will hit, as convective showers and thunderstorms can be highly localized.

Heavy rain could also have a more significant impact, especially in areas that have been recently ravaged by wildfires.

“Enhanced risk of landslides in vulnerable areas, particularly those affected by recent wildfires (burn scars). The combination of heavy rainfall and potentially unstable soils could trigger landslides or debris flows, posing potential hazards to public safety, infrastructure and natural landscapes,” said Environment Canada.

“The anticipated high precipitation rates over a short duration could lead to water pooling in areas with poor drainage, exacerbating localized flooding concerns. Communities with historically lower drainage capacities should be particularly vigilant.”
