Highway 1 reopens in the Fraser Canyon after seven-week closure due to wildfires

BOSTON BAR, B.C. — A section of the Trans-Canada Highway in Highway in the Fraser Canyon has reopened after seven weeks, as the threat of wildfire subsides.

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit said the highway – which has been closed since July 7 – will initially operate with a single-lane-alternating traffic extending from one kilometre south of the Alexandra Bridge to one kilometre north of the Alexandra Tunnel.

“The traffic restrictions support ongoing BC Hydro pole-restoration work,” the Ministry said in a statement. “The work includes the use of several large cranes operating in a challenging environment.”

A pilot vehicle will help escort traffic through the area, and the ministry cautions that travellers should expect delays of as long as 30 minutes. There may also be periodic short closures between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. to allow BC Hydro crews to work. The latest information can be found here.
