Village of Clinton partially reduces evacuation alert area in response to Pear Lake wildfire

“At this time, there is no need to evacuate these properties, but residents should be aware of their evacuation route and have essentials ready in a to go bag,” the village states. “Should conditions change, an evacuation alert and/or an evacuation order will be reinstated as necessary.”

Meantime, a boil water advisory remains in effect for Clinton residents. It was issued on July 25, one day after the village issued an evacuation order due to the Pear Lake wildfire.

Residents are asked to bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute, then allow it to cool, before using it for brushing teeth, cooking or drinking. The village says tap water can still be used for bathing, household cleaning and laundry.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District encourages residents in the Clinton area to visit Bethel Pentecostal Church at 308 Dewdney Avenue in the village for free clothing and household items that have been donated. The Clinton Food Bank is also located next door to the church.

The resiliency centre is open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Clinton Curling Club at 1419 Kellow Lane. The Clinton Eco-Depot is also open every day from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Clinton residents were able to return home since the village’s evacuation order was downgraded to an alert on Aug. 15.

The Pear Lake wildfire, which triggered an evacuation order for the Clinton area, is measured at around 164,744.95 hectares in size. The BC Wildfire Service says fire behaviour at the site is expected to increase throughout the week with drier, warmer conditions in the forecast through Wednesday.

As of the wildfire service’s latest update Monday, 510 firefighters and 119 structure protection personnel are responding to the Pear Lake wildfire. They’re being accompanied by 106 pieces of heavy equipment, 21 helicopters and an incident management team.
