WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — The City of Williams Lake is praising the efforts of their newly created Rapid Response Crew during wildfire season.

The City said Williams Lake Fire Department’s Rapid Response Crew was implemented on July 24 and has responded to about 30 calls in 18 days.

Protective Services Director and Williams Lake Fire Department Chief Evan Dean said the team was able to significantly improve response time, down to about five minutes — seven minutes faster than their previous response time.

“We brought it in response to the current weather conditions and some of the community anxiety about some recent fires in the area, and some resource deployment down in the Felker Lake area. It yielded great results almost immediately,” said Dean.

“Having a crew on standby at the fire hall has been able to expedite deployment time significantly, which we believe saved multiple structures in numerous events.”

The decision to create a Rapid Response Crew came after a fast-moving grass fire broke out in the Williams Lake Stampede Grounds, burning closely to a nearby commercial building.

“This incident, combined with extreme fire-weather conditions and multiple lightning events, prompted WLFD to request authorization for a staffed rapid-response crew at the Fire Hall. Senior staff approved this request the same day,” said City Council documents

The Rapid Response Crew was initially made up of a team of four firefighters on standby 24 hours a day, but Dean said the team was reduced.

“Now, we have two during the critical fire hours of the day from noon to 10 p.m.,” said Dean.

“That has still been difficult to staff, but it has been successful.”
