Paws in the Peaks raises the ‘woof’; event welcomed for third straight year, new dog-friendly activities

The festival’s signature Pup Parade and Patio Crawl begins at noon Saturday where costumed dogs will make their way through the village, while spectators vote — helping select winners in categories including best dressed and cutest pup.

St. Louis said about 40 dogs had registered for the parade as of Friday. Additional participants can still register at Sun Peaks Plaza beginning Saturday morning.

“Absolutely bring a costume. Bring your energy,” St. Louis said. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to get out and do something with your pet and spend the day on the mountain.”

New this year? Corgi races.

The waddling race is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Sun Peaks Centre Plaza with approximately 15 local corgis being registered in advance of the heat.

Other activities include outdoor dog yoga — or ‘Doga’ — a working-dog showcase, a pet-focused vendor village, a scavenger hunt and even free screenings of “Because of Winn-Dixie” and “Marley & Me.”

St. Louis said the involvement of businesses throughout the village has helped the festival continue to grow throughout the years.

“We love this event because it also includes our business members,” she said. “It’s really getting an opportunity to share our business community with this event, and I think that makes it a little bit special as well.”

The festival continues Sunday with Sun Peaks Market Day from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. along the Village Stroll.
