No injuries reported in house fire on Tk’emlups reserve

KAMLOOPS — Smoke was seen billowing through the hazy sky as Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) crews respond to a residential structure fire on the Tk’emlups reserve.

The call from the 700-block of Shuswap Road east of Sun Rivers came in over the scanner at around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 12).

“When crews arrived, there was heavy smoke and flame from the front window and roof area,” said KFR Platoon Chief Ken Hartt.

“The top floor continued to burn for a few minutes while we were applying water to it. Most of the structure is a loss.”

Hartt said despite the loss of the two-story home, there were no injuries as a result of the fire.

Firefighters remained on the scene until about 1 p.m., with crews returning to check on the site afterwards.

“We had 14 personnel on scene and we used about 9,000 gallons of water to put the fire out,” said Hartt.

“We’ll continue to check on it throughout the night, just because of the interface hazard right now. We don’t want any rekindling of the fire.”

Hartt said KFR does not yet know the cause of the fire.

“We can’t get into the structure because of the structural integrity of the structure. It’s not safe for our inspectors to go in. We’ll have to wait for the insurance company to being their inspectors on scene before we try to identify a cause,” said Hartt.
