Minister Greene in Kamloops following provincial state of emergency declaration
KAMLOOPS — Over the weekend, the BC Government enacted a province-wide state of emergency, opening up new options in the ongoing fight against wildfires raging across British Columbia. It came as the community of Summerland was forced to evacuate, leaving 20,000 people out of their homes. Minister Kelly Greene was in Kamloops on Monday (Aug 10) morning meeting with local officials.
A state of emergency for British Columbia doesn’t open access to new funding, but does give the province a few more tools to combat what has been a devastating wildfire season thus far.
“We have kind of gotten to the point where we need to have additional powers,” Greene told CFJC News. “So that provincial state of emergency unlocks additional tools for us, such as restricting non-essential travel, the rationing of goods or services. So kind of things that support a response.”
