Vernon-area wildfire being held, power being restored

The utility provider noted it had also restored power to 84 customers in the Kelly Lake area and, while it does not provide electricity in Summerland, it had been working with the district and FortisBC to restore the service in that community.

People were advised to be prepared for extended outages due to wildfires and other emergencies by having a household emergency plan, grab-and-go and emergency kits, keeping emergency contact information readily available, and taking steps to FireSmart there homes.

The wildfire burning in the Okanagan Indian Band land has been somewhat contained.

The B.C. Wildfire Service said the Bradley Creek wildfire was Being Held as of Sunday (Aug. 9) morning.

“At this stage, the wildfire is projected, based on fuel and weather conditions and resource availability, to remain within the current perimeter, control line or boundary,” the B.C. Wildfire Service stated.

“This status change can also be attributed to the collaboration between wildfire crews, local fire departments, partners, aviation, heavy equipment and the tireless work to patrol the entire fire perimeter.”

The fire started July 31 and, as of Sunday, had burned an estimated 2,634.8 hectares.

Evacuation Orders remained in effect for properties in the OKIB and surrounding area, though there were some downgraded.

The Township of Spallumcheen stated Sunday that all properties previously under an Order were now under an Alert, and Alerts were removed from the other properties.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District also lifted it’s Evacuation Alerts for properties on Highway 97 from the Sweetsbridge/Cedar Hill area through Glenemma and north partway along Yankee Flats and Salmon River Roads.

The BCWS also stated B.C. Hydro was being allowed into the area to restore power Sunday.
